23 Sep HempMeds® Helps Hope4Harper Raise $20k for Epilepsy Research at the 5th Annual “Run4Hope”
The weather Saturday, September 17th, was perfect as the sun gently rose over Carrollton, Texas, for the 5th annual Run4Hope event, held to further a greater understanding of childhood epilepsy.
Hundreds of runners gathered at the Josey Ranch Athletics Complex, which began at 7 am on what was a gorgeous North Texas day. After registration, a one mile kid’s fun run preceded the event’s main 5k.
The Run4Hope is organized each year by the Hope4Harper nonprofit to raise awareness and help support research for CDKL5 and similar seizure disorders. Penny Howard started Hope4Harper after her daughter Harper was diagnosed early with CDKL5, a rare form of childhood epilepsy.
The HempMeds® team, which has supported Hope4Harper and the Howard family for years, donated $10,000 to the Run4Hope to help the organization meet its goal. In addition to making a donation to the event, HempMeds® had a booth set up near the event’s start/finish line, educating participants about CBD hemp oil products like our RSHO™ and Dixie Botanicals® brands and giving them a shady place to rest after their run.
This year’s Run4Hope was also held as a memorial event after the sad loss of Harper earlier this year, just shy of her sixth birthday. Harper died on January 8,2016, from unexpected complications beyond her condition.
Although Harper’s wheelchair was empty (adorned lovingly with her picture and her tiara and sash from winning Miss Texas Princess Covergirl last year) she was held in everyone’s heart through the entire event.
The event raised nearly $20,000 for research into CDKL5 and similar neurological conditions. After Harper’s death, her parents acted quickly to donate part of her body to medical research at the Muotri Lab at UC San Diego in HempMeds®’s backyard.
There, Dr. Muotri, a foremost expert in stem cell research, is using Harper’s brain and tissue donation to explore and hopefully treat genetic neurological disorders like Harper’s. Donations to this year’s Run4Hope will help continue Dr. Muotri’s much needed research.
“We’re honored to be part of the Howard family’s journey and applaud Penny Howard’s continued courage to share her daughter Harper’s story, and continue her efforts to raise funds for critical medical research that will help other families around the world,” said Dr. Stuart Titus, CEO of HempMeds® parent company Medical Marijuana, Inc. “As we’ve seen time and again in legalization efforts across the nation, families of young children with special needs are helping drive the conversation around CBD access by sharing their stories.”
Plans have already been made and a date set (Sept. 16) for next year’s Run4Hope and both Hope4Harper and HempMeds® hope to see you there.
