What is Phytocannabinoid hemp oil?

In your pursuit of learning about CBD and CBD oil, you may have come across the term “phytocannabinoid hemp oil.” With all of the information out there about CBD, phytocannabinoids, and hemp oil, sometimes it can be hard to keep everything straight. Below we dive into the definition of phytocannabinoid hemp oil, explain how it differs from CBD oil, and also explore the types of phytocannabinoid hemp oil products that are available on the market today.

What is Phytocannabinoid Hemp Oil?

In short, phytocannabinoid hemp oil contains all the beneficial ingredients of the hemp plant: over 100+ naturally occurring compounds, including essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and (of course) cannabinoids like CBD.

What is a Cannabinoid?

Before plunging into the world of phytocannabinoids, it’s important to get a good understanding of cannabinoids in general. Cannabinoids are defined as the chemical substances capable of binding to receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system. They can come from plants, but certain kinds also naturally occur in the human body (endocannabinoids). Others can be manufactured synthetically.

You may be wondering, “What is the endocannabinoid system and what does it do?” Scientists are still discovering answers to these questions, but the current consensus among researchers is that the endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in regulating a number of bodily functions all in an effort to maintain “homeostasis,” or an overall state of balance. When cannabinoids are not adequately present to bind with receptors in the system’s cells, the body is unable to adequately maintain balance. Conversely, plant-derived cannabinoids (often taken in the form of cannabis goods like CBD oil) may help to augment the body’s own naturally occurring cannabinoids to support the endocannabinoid system and improve overall well-being.

What is the Difference Between Phytocannabinoids and Other Cannabinoids?

While all cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system, not all cannabinoids come from the same place. Phytocannabinoids are the naturally-occurring cannabinoids found in cannabis plants like hemp as opposed to synthetic cannabinoids manufactured artificially and endocannabinoids, which are the cannabinoids naturally produced in the bodies of all mammals, including humans and most pets.

Is CBD a Phytocannabinoid?

Yes — CBD (short for cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis sativa plant. Since it’s derived from a plant, it is classified as a phytocannabinoid. CBD is one of the most prevalent phytocannabinoids in cannabis, composing up to 40% of the plant’s extract. In industrial hemp, which can be selectively bred to contain high concentrations of CBD (and only 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis, per the 2018 Farm Bill), CBD content can be much greater. CBD does not naturally occur in humans.

Phytocannabinoid hemp oil contains all the essential, beneficial, properties of the hemp plant  -over 100+ naturally occurring compounds – including essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and (of course) cannabinoids.

What’s the Difference Between CBD Oil and Phytocannabinoid Hemp Oil?

First, it’s important to explain that CBD oil and phytocannabinoid hemp oil are terms that are often used interchangeably because in most cases they refer to the same thing: CBD hemp oil extracted from the hemp plant. Most of the time, CBD oil is simply a more common way to describe phytocannabinoid hemp oil.

The term “phytocannabinoid hemp oil” is another way to describe full-spectrum hemp oil that contains CBD and the plant’s other naturally occurring trace cannabinoids, as well as chlorophyll, terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, and more.

With that said, “CBD oil” is sometimes used to refer to a hemp oil made with CBD isolate, rather than full-spectrum hemp oil. This type of CBD oil is not phytocannabinoid hemp oil because it combines another type of oil with pure CBD only, without the other hemp-derived compounds and nutrients.

It’s the presence of the entire full-spectrum of naturally occurring hemp compounds in the resulting oil that marks the difference between CBD oil and phytocannabinoid hemp oil.

The term phytocannabinoid isn’t new, per se, just more commonly used as more CBD oils hit the market. In fact, HempMeds® has sold phytocannabinoid hemp oil since day one via our Real Scientific Hemp Oil® (RSHO®) Professional line. A major benefit of full-spectrum phytocannabinoid hemp oil is that it’s easier to dissolve, emulsify, and homogenize than isolate. For you DIYers, home chefs, wholesalers, or store owners, this is an important point to note.

Our RSHO® Green Label is a great example of a true 1-to-1 phytocannabinoid hemp oil, as it’s minimally processed to represent the hemp plant’s biological and chemical makeup in the resulting oil. This means that when you consume our Green Label, it’s like consuming the hemp plant — but much easier than chewing on raw stalks!

Our RSHO® Blue Label is the same as our Green, but the cannabidiolic acid (CBDa) has been activated for greater cannabidiol concentration. Of course, you lose some terpenoids and precursors in the process (everything can only total to 100%, right?) but the increased CBD gives you more of the CBD’s specific benefits.

Our RSHO® Gold Label is an even more activated version of the Blue, decarboxylated oil that also removes the plant chlorophylls, lipids, waxes, and other plant matter, giving you a refined, golden, and pleasant-tasting oil.

Is CBD Isolate Phytocannabinoid Hemp Oil?

No  — not entirely. CBD is just one phytocannabinoid of the hemp plant. Like THC, it’s received plenty of media attention as its benefits and the stories of the people that it helps spread throughout the community. However, it’s commonly accepted among the hemp oil community that phytocannabinoid hemp oil means full spectrum (with the over 100+ compounds that we have discovered to date).

Compounds like cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabichromene (CBC) may not yet have the same media attention; however, there is emerging research and evidence pointing to these newly identified cannabinoids that show they may be even more beneficial than CBD or THC by themselves. The entourage effect, when multiple cannabinoids interact with one another to produce effects, gives the body many more benefits than any one cannabinoid alone. CBD oils that are made only from isolated cannabinoids give just a select few benefits as opposed to a group of benefits from this “entourage” of cannabinoids.

Can Phytocannabinoids Make You Fail a Drug Test?

The answer depends on the phytocannabinoid in question, as both CBD and THC interact with the body differently and vary in their effects.

CBD has shown to not be psychoactive nor addictive. As such, CBD is not tested for on most drug tests.

Most drug tests screening for cannabis use look for THC, or its main metabolite THC-COOH. THC is not only psychoactive when consumed in high amounts, but it can also cause you to fail a drug test if its presence is still detectable in your body’s systems.

Since phytocannabinoid hemp oil contains no more than trace amounts of THC, in most cases it will not cause a positive drug test when it is consumed at suggested servings.

That said, in rare cases, hemp products have caused positive drug tests. If you are going to be taking a drug test, consult your doctor, employer, or drug test provider to learn how your test may respond to phytocannabinoid hemp oil and CBD.
