WHO to Undertake Comprehensive Review of CBD

CBD and 15 Substances Reviewed by Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD)

You may have noticed a lot of chatter about cannabidiol from the World Health Organization this week! Their recent meeting at the 39th Expert Committee on Drug Dependence resulted in two extremely profound statements. In the WHO’s statement they recommend, carfentail, prescribed as Fentanyl, be rescheduled to Schedule I and IV. This would require the strictest control for prescription and administration, limiting production and supply to be available only towards medical treatment or research.

In medical context, an analogue is considered any substance similar but identical to another. Fentanyl’s analogues (acryloylfentanyl, fluoroisobutyrfentanyl, furanyl fentanyl, ocfentanil, and tetrahydrofuranyl fentanyl) were recommended to be controlled by Schedule I of the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. So what about CBD?

CBD Went to Geneva to Get it Started

Cannabidiol (CBD), another compound under the public eye, was reviewed as well. The WHO’s recent report stated “To date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” In a monumental statement, the World Health Organization instead believes that existing research points towards CBD having many benefits towards promoting health and wellness in people in need.

If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook you probably saw Raul Elizalde, President of HempMeds Mexico as he journeyed to Geneva, Switzerland to share his family’s CBD success story. Since accomplishing his goal of first-ever import of CBD into Mexico, Raul has led the growth of CBD in his home country, through HempMeds Mexico, helping to bring its benefits to families.

The WHO’s Statement on CBD

From their website, the World Health Organization’s believes, “Current evidence also shows that cannabidiol is not likely to be abused or create dependence as for other cannabinoids (such as Tetra Hydro Cannabinol (THC), for instance). The ECDD therefore concluded that current information does not justify scheduling of cannabidiol and postponed a fuller review of cannabidiol preparations to May 2018, when the committee will undertake a comprehensive review of cannabis and cannabis related substances.”
